Sabbatical Guidelines

The following links include University-level Guidelines and Policies related to sabbatical leaves that should be reviewed by faculty applicants and their department Chairs to make sure that all parties understand their responsibilities and expectations ahead of preparing/recommending a sabbatical leave proposal to the Dean's office. 

ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn – Sabbatical Leave Policies and Procedures

Steps to be completed to apply for sabbatical leave:
  1. Develop and submit a narrative statement that presents a well-considered plan that addresses the following areas:
    1. Purpose and goal of the sabbatical leave
    2. Description of the planned activities (To the extent possible frame the plan/work in the context of latest academic literature)
    3. Expected time schedule (i.e., relate the plan outlined in #2 to the timeline of the leave)
    4. The value of the sabbatical leave to the faculty’s professional development
    5. The value/importance of the sabbatical leave in achieving the strategic goals of the academic unit, College, and University
    6. List of anticipated outcomes/products/accomplishments
    7. List of dates of previous sabbaticals and accomplishments from the sabbatical
    8. List of other scholarly accomplishments since the last sabbatical
  2. Prepare and include the following information in your packet:
    1. Current Curriculum Vita organized in reverse chronological order
    2. Most recent 3-year or later evaluation letter
    3. Summary report filed from the last sabbatical leave
  3. Complete form HR36620 (Form J). Applications must be signed by the applicant and chair before they are forward to the Dean. Prior to signing, applicants and chairs are required to review the policies and procedures above to ensure that all expectations and responsibilities are followed.
  4. Submit your complete packet (items 1-3) to the CASL Administrative Manager by the College set deadline in early January.
Changes to Sabbatical Leaves

Once sabbatical leaves are approved, any changes to the scope, dates, and other terms of the original plan must be requested in writing and approved by the chair, Dean, and Provost ahead of the leave.

Post-sabbatical reporting from the faculty member

Upon completion of the sabbatical, a report to the Dean is due within 90 days. All reports must be sent to the CASL Administrative Manager and Department Chair.

The report must include the following information:

  1. Purpose and goals of sabbatical
  2. Summary and description of activities undertaken
  3. Major accomplishments and outcomes of the sabbatical
  4. Relevance to teaching, research, and/or service
  5. Related future plans/use; e.g., incorporate in syllabi, special lecture, publication, etc.; timetable for implementation, publication, etc.
  6. Include relevant attachments and submit copies of reports, papers, books, software, etc., as they are published
