Tuition
The tuition and fee schedule can be used to estimate your per term charges. It is reviewed and approved each year by the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Rates are finalized each summer for the upcoming academic year and have averaged 3-5% increases in recent years. What a student actually pays depends on the amount of financial aid received.
Tuition bills are issued each term and can be accessed via your . Calculate your estimated total tuition by determining how many courses you plan to take each term and the number of terms required to complete your program of study.
At the graduate level, a full-time course load for enrollment certification, financial aid, and visa-related purposes is eight credits. See the for complete information. Most graduate courses are three credit hours each, so full-time status generally requires registering for three courses per term.
You must be registered at least half-time (four credits) to be eligible for federal financial aid (Unsubsidized Direct Loans, Grad PLUS Loans at the graduate level). Institutional aid (Dearborn Graduate Scholarship) has a different minimum enrollment threshold, which will be detailed in individual terms and conditions.
Students balancing full time work and graduate school are generally not advised to take more than two courses per term.

University of Michigan-wide on all three campuses are established by the Board of Regents. If your ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn application indicates out of state activity (attended an out of state school, currently live out of state, etc), we must flag you as out of state and a separate must be completed to change your status. You may apply for in-state tuition for any term in which you are enrolled or intend to enroll. It can take up to 12 weeks for an initial review of your application, so it is best to apply early. Common questions are answered on this . If you need an in-state determination to be able to enroll and you have already submitted your application for in-state tuition to Ann Arbor and are waiting for a decision, please reach out to the Office of Graduate Studies to review options.
Most graduate students (exception: CECS PhD students) will not have financial aid details included in their admission letter. If you receive any institutional scholarship offers, you will be notified via email. Notifications may come several days (or sometimes weeks) after your admission, depending on the source of the aid.
The actual funds will be shown in your once awarded. Awarding timelines vary by term. Fall Term start graduate awards are generally made around July. Winter Term start graduate awards are generally made around November. To request financial aid for the summer term (Summer Term/Summer 1/Summer 2), you will need to submit an online summer financial aid application available through . See Summer Aid for more details. Note: this step is not necessary for Fall or Winter Term aid.
You will need to accept your scholarship offers in the portal in order for them to credit your student account and/or a refund to be issued to you (if applicable).
If you have been offered federal student loans, you can accept, reduce, decline, or leave at the offered status on a term-by-term basis. Unless you accept at least part of your loan, no funds will be applied to your student account. In addition, you must be enrolled at least half time (four credits) at the time of loan disbursement. You will also need to complete Entrance Loan Counseling and a Master Promissory Note at (if receiving a federal loan). Private loans are handled separately.

Whenever any aid is disbursed to or reversed from a student's account, an email notification of disbursement is sent to the ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn email address. Students are directed to review their student account.
If the amount of financial aid received for a term exceeds the cost of tuition and fees, a refund will be made as a direct deposit or sent as a paper check. Students are encouraged to enroll in the direct deposit program because of the speed and safety of the transaction.
The first step is to understand the benefits your employer provides in detail. This information can often be obtained in Employee Handbooks or by inquiring with your Human Resources department. Understand all eligibility requirements, any cost-sharing requirements, and any caps on reimbursement as well as the procedure for employer payment.
At ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn, students whose tuition and fees are to be paid by an employer, agency, or other sponsor, must have authorization on file with the Student Accounts office. Vouchers are posted onto student accounts after the term’s add/drop deadline or the 100% tuition and fees deadline. Full details at Third-Party Sponsor Billing.
No, they do not. Courses need to be part of a degree program to be eligible for aid. See Course Program of Study for more details.
To be considered a graduate course and be billed at the graduate tuition rate, courses must be at the 500-level or above. Undergraduate prerequisite coursework (400-level or below) will be assessed at the undergraduate tuition rate for the undergraduate courses.

All students requesting an I-20 must show a minimum of $48,000 USD. The amount increases if being accompanied by a spouse or child. Full details at Incoming International Students: Prepare to Arrive. The Dearborn Graduate Scholarship (for students classified as out of state attending an in-person program) will be automatically offered. This will reduce the amount you have to show on your Initial I-20 Financial Documentation eForm by $10,000 USD.
In order to obtain your initial I-20, US government regulations require you to provide the Office of International Affairs (OIA) with documentation of sufficient financial resources equal to the all-inclusive estimated annual cost of attendance at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Please note, that total amount may not necessarily be the amount that you actually spend in attending the University.
Research and teaching assistantships, which cover tuition and fees, health insurance, and provide a stipend, are available on our campus. In the 24-25 academic year, for example, CECS awarded approximately 100 each of Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) positions. However, they are often given to doctoral students over master's level students. Assistantships will most often be found in the sciences. It is best to reach out to specific program faculty to see if they have any funding available. Faculty directories showing research interests are available by college.
Additional Master’s level student research assistant positions or teaching and laboratory assistant positions paid hourly can be found by searching our webpage. Just under 200 were hired for CECS in the 24-25 academic year as an example.
