Your three core courses introduce you to subjects like math for electrical and computer engineering, robotic systems, control of robots, and mobile robots.

You choose nine credits of courses from a specialization you create yourself or from suggested specializations in:

• Sensing and Processing
• Systems and Control
• Machine Learning and Reasoning
• Autonomous Vehicles

More choices are available in your cognate courses, which are six credits of graduate-level courses in an engineering discipline other than robotics engineering. Some options include:

• Automotive engineering
• Engineering management
• Industrial and manufacturing systems engineering
• Mechanical engineering
• Computer and information science

You complete the degree by either writing a thesis or taking additional graduate courses.

You’ll have opportunities for hands-on learning throughout the program. Some of it will occur in our two robotics engineering laboratories, where you’ll have access to the Techman TM5-900 industrial robot, the TurtleBot 2 open source personal robot, and the TurtleBot 3 Burger mobile robotics educational platform.

You’ll have access to the labs outside class and even after hours with the department’s permission to build and program robotic systems. The Robotics Engineering program is also offered online through CECS Online. The online courses utilize video streaming of the lectures given on campus. The online students have the opportunity to interact with the instructors and with fellow students (both on campus as well as online) through CANVAS. The class lectures, notes, and discussions are posted on CANVAS for online students' access. 

To be considered for regular admission, you must have a bachelor’s degree in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, or industrial and manufacturing systems engineering from an accredited institution and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. You also may be considered if you have a bachelor’s degree in a physical or mathematical science and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Students with undergraduate degrees in other fields may be conditionally admitted and required to take preparatory courses before or after starting the program.

All applicants must have taken prerequisite courses in ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, probability and statistics, dynamics, data structures and algorithms, and computer programming.
