Our programs are taught primarily by Ph.D. faculty dedicated to teaching and research. Some courses are taught by experts from local industry.
The ECE Department currently offers three bachelor programs in computer engineering, electrical engineering, and robotics engineering, as well as a dual degree in CE/EE. Please visit the program pages to learn more about requirements.
4+1 Accelerated Masters Programs
Beginning Fall 2024, the 4+1 accelerated undergraduate/master鈥檚 studies option in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and robotics engineering allows the most qualified 萝莉社-Dearborn undergraduate electrical, computer, and robotics engineering students to pursue a program of study in which BSE and MSE degrees are earned in a five-year accelerated format. This is achieved by combining a portion of undergraduate and graduate coursework.
To successfully achieve the 4+1 option within a five-year timeframe, students can look forward to completing 2 core courses, 2 cognates, and 6 electives, which may even include up to 6 credits of thesis work. Additionally, for those who opt not to use the three transfer credit options, there is an opportunity to engage in 4 graduate courses during the final year of study, providing an enriching academic experience. In this case, students should plan on completing the master鈥檚 degree in three terms after the BSE degree is completed.

Engineering students are eligible to participate in the College of Engineering and Computer Science's Cooperative Education Program. During co-op placements engineering juniors or seniors alternate semesters of full-time classes with semesters of full-time paid engineering work in a company or organization they have applied for. Co-op students gain valuable professional work experience in engineering before they graduate; they earn a salary and also establish contacts useful for later employment.

ECE undergraduate students wishing to participate in guided study or directed research endeavors of academically appropriate efforts under the supervision of a full-time ECE faculty member (tenured, tenure track, and LEO IIIs and IVs) are encouraged to sign up for ECE 491 Directed Studies or ECE 492 Directed Research. These courses can be taken for one (1) to four (4) credit hours.
Undergraduate students are allowed a maximum total of four (4) credit hours in ECE 491 Directed Study and/or ECE 492 Directed Research. Students engaged in the Experiential Honors Program should elect ENGR 492 Directed Research or ENGR 493 Directed Design for one (1) credit hour, for a maximum total of two (2) to three (3) credit hours.
To be eligible for directed study and/or research, students must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Students electing to engage in either directed study or directed research must first discuss their independent project possibilities with a faculty member. If approved, the student will then complete a course authorization and proposal form, which must signed and dated by the faculty member they will be working with. The proposal must be clearly written, outline the student's intended goals, make a strong case for the work proposed, and indicate the specific work to be contributed by the student.
Once a faculty member has agreed to supervise and evaluate the independent study or research effort, the student will then submit their course authorization and proposal form to the ECE Department via email to [email protected] for final review and approval by the ECE Department Chair.
Undergraduate students will also need to petition the CECS Office of Advising and Academic Success to ensure that this course will be accepted for their degree program.
